 Monkey Race Print

This exercise is fun for younger children but can easily challenge all age groups. All you need is one ball per young athlete. Have the participants hold a ball with both hands between their legs. Balls of different sizes can be used based on the age and skill of each youngster. For very young children, even an easy-to-hold bean bag will do. At first just have the children walk around. Then, once they have progressed to moving more quickly with a lower center of gravity, they can compete in a race.  Since the fastest children get down very low for this one, we like to call it a “Monkey Race.” It is a solid exercise to help athletes develop an awareness that a lower center of gravity directly helps balance and movement.
